William G. Plunkett, MD, Joins Northshore Internal Medicine Associates
HAMMOND — William G. Plunkett, MD, is joining the practice of Northshore Internal Medicine Associates, a clinic of North Oaks Health System.
Dr. Plunkett is certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has practiced medicine for 24 years, 19 of which have been in Louisiana.
A graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va., Dr. Plunkett completed his post-graduate training at University of South Florida in Tampa.

Coventry Health Care Settles $262 Million Class-Action Suit
BETHESDA, MD- The Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Louisiana affirmed a trial court’s decision ranting summary judgment against First Health Group Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of the insurer.
The suit involves claims of alleged violations of notice provisions of Louisiana’s Any Willing Provider Act in connection with providers providing services to injured workers with workers’ compensation claims.
Coventry said it will incur a non-recurring pre-tax charge to its second-quarter earnings of $278 million.
The LAFP Installs its 63rd President
Baton Rouge — The Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians (LAFP) announced the installation of its 2010-2011 President, who was sworn in at the inaugural luncheon in Destin, Florida on Saturday, July 3. Dr. Alan L. LeBato of Lake Charles became the 63rd President of the LAFP. Dr. LeBato is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital in Lake Charles, La. He is a 1983 graduate of LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. He completed his residency at the W.O. Moss Regional Family Practice Residency, where he served as chief resident in his third year. Dr. LeBato has been active in the American Academy of Family Physicians and is a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Board of Family Medicine.
OLOL Physician Selected for National Catholic Health Board
Baton Rouge — Richard Vath, MD, FCCP, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center was selected to serve a three year term as a trustee on the Catholic Health Association Board. The election was held during the 2010 Catholic Health Assembly in Denver, June 13-15, 2010.

Tulane University School of Medicine Opens Satellite Campus at Baton Rouge General Medical Center
BATON ROUGE— Baton Rouge General Medical Center held a ribbon cutting ceremony at its Mid City Campus on June 21 to celebrate its affiliation with Tulane University School of Medicine and the establishment of a satellite training campus in Baton Rouge. Working together, Baton Rouge General Medical Center and Tulane University School of Medicine created the Baton Rouge LEAD (Leadership, Education, Advocacy and Discovery) Academy, which marks the first time in the medical school’s 175-year history that it has opened a training campus outside of the New Orleans area. The Baton Rouge LEAD Academy program will expand Baton Rouge General’s role as a teaching hospital and continue the transformation of Baton Rouge into a center of medical education and leadership.
